The Mission Cemetery

This is the entrance to the Mission cemetery. Most of the burials were done in unmarked graves. “The Mission Book of Burials” records that the first burial in this cemetery was on March 17,1798.

There are 2,249 Indian names in that book. Father Joseph Mut (Moot),the parish priest from 1886-1889, is the only priest buried here. The Mission cemetery also contains the graves of some of the earliest European settlers of San Luis Obispo County, California.
