The Bell Tower

Finally we come to the Bell Tower of Mission San Miguel and sadly, to the end of our tour of Old Mission San Miguel.

The bell tower was constructed during the last major restoration of the Mission in the 1920's and 1930's. Unlike the Mission itself, it is strongly constructed of mortar and river stone to hold the masssive Mission bells.

The center 2000 pound bell in the tower is one of the largest in the mission chain. It was cast in San Francisco in 1888 from fragments of older bells.
