The Kitchen Hearth

In the kitchen, there is also an open hearth grill which was used to cook meals for the Mission. Notice that there is no Chimney! There is only a simple vent hole in the kitchen wall. It must have been very hot and smoky in the kitchen at meal time.

Historians believe that much of the Mission cooking and baking was probably done outdoors when the weather was nice, as it is in San Miguel most of the year.
